The Sussex Heritage Trust Awards held at Lancing College, celebrate the absolute best in high-quality conservation, restoration, and design of newly built projects, whilst also encouraging the use of traditional skills and crafts.

This year saw the highest ever number of entries with the judges visiting 94 contenders across the county.

Sea Lanes impressed the judges with their entry outlining the journey from taking a vacant and unloved parcel of land on Brighton seafront and transforming it into a year-round hub for physical and mental wellbeing.

The entry outlined Sea Lanes’ commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, and energy efficiency. From overcoming scrutiny during the planning applications to using the pop-up development to highlight commercial viability. Since opening in June 2023 Sea Lanes has had over 90,000 unique swimmers and created 100 new full-time jobs in the local community whilst supporting local businesses.

The Sussex Heritage Trust Award judges commented:

“Excellent use of a difficult site that displays ingenuity to provide much-needed facilities and succeeds in refocusing the city towards Black Rock thereby revitalising a neglected part of the city.

“Good mix of commercial and community facilities which makes the most of its beachfront location and is sympathetic to the beach biodiversity.”
